Due to the amount of hockey being played now across North America, the options for players are steadily increasing. At one time, a high school aged player in the state of Minnesota had but really only one option and that was to play for his or her local high school. Now with the National Devolpment program in Ann Arbor, the USHL and major junior in Canada, players have a wide range of options.

The question lingers: Is it better to stay in high school or play junior hockey? The answer to this will vary from player to player. Some kids at 16-17 years old are mature beyond their years, while others might be going on 14.

As adults and parents, we know each of our kids are different. Some can handle being away from home for extended periods while others have trouble with one night away.

Another factor is what’s best for their development? At the end if the day, the kid needs to be on the ice and play. If he or she is in a program that is playing a lot of games and seeing quality ice time, then that is conducive to their development.

On the other hand, to be on a team where, yes, you are playing games but not getting the ice time needed that can stunt your progress. I really believe each scenario is unique and should be handled in that way.

There is nothing wrong with a player wanting to stay in high school and play for their community, i.e. T.J. Oshie, Jake Gardiner or others who decide to leave and play NTDP/junior, i.e. Erik Johnson, Jordan Schroeder.

To make a blanket statement, saying kids should stay or leave is wrong because each player is different and they should not be criticized because they either leave or stay. The bottom line is the player has to make the decision that’s best for him or her. If they’re happy, then that was the right choice.
