On Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Parade Ice Garden, the St. Louis Park girls’ high school team was playing the Minneapolis Novas. As freshman Elena Basill was crossing the opposing blue line to begin the forecheck, she was hit by a Novas player. Her head took the brunt of the initial blow and then she was propelled to the ice and hit her head.

She immediately became disoriented and began having dry heaves on the ice. She was immediately transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center Trauma Center where she spent a day and a half. She is recovering from a severe concussion and has not returned to school. She also will not play any more this season and her prospects of ever playing hockey again are not good.
