The fifth season of the Girls Upper Midwest High School Elite League will soon be underway! Modeled after the boys’ version, this fall developmental league allows the top female hockey players in the upper Midwest to compete with players of similar ability. The schedule allows multi-sport athletes to continue their fall sport.
“This league puts the top players against the top players. This is not only good for their development, but it also makes it easier for our staff to scout talent in the region,” said Jeff Giesen, Head Coach at St. Cloud State University.
The UMHSEL is a non-profit, 501(c)3 venture. Bauer is a corporate sponsor and has generously donated equipment for each player.
“We have great confidence that this women’s league is one of the best in the nation,” said Mark Duggan, President and CEO of Bauer Hockey.
The Minnesota Whitecaps professional hockey team is a league partner. Whitecaps players will not only coach the teams, but will skate weekly practices in full equipment in an effort to push the girls to a pace beyond their comfort zone. Minnesota Hockey and the Minnesota Girls High School Coaches Association have also partnered up to help support this exciting endeavor.
“This league supports our mission of community-based hockey, while providing elite-level girls in the state the same opportunities that the boys have,” said Mike MacMillan, Advanced Committee Chair, Minnesota Hockey/USA Hockey MN District Coach in Chief.
The 2012 league is comprised of four teams: three UMHSEL teams and Shattuck-St. Mary’s top team. Each team will have a total of 18-19 skaters and two goalies on the roster. The league will run four consecutive weekends from Sept. 21-Oct. 14. On the next weekend (Oct. 19-21), the league will send three teams team to compete in the UMHSEL Bauer NIT tournament hosted at Fogerty Arena in Blaine.
The Elite League will then take part in the Detroit USA-Canada Cup on Oct. 25-28.
Admission for Elite League games is $5 for adults age 19 & up, and free for 18 and under. For more information and league updates, visit us online at www.hselitehockey.com.
